Thirsk Doctors Surgery, The Health Centre, Chapel Street, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, YO7 1LGTel: 01845 440462
We are a dispensing practice, which means that if you live more than 1 mile from the nearest pharmacy you can get your prescribed medicines from the dispensary here at the practice if you wish to do so. We currently have around 2800 patients who are eligible to use this service
If you live less than 1 mile from the nearest pharmacy the rules do not allow us to dispense your medicines and you will have to get your medicines from a chemist. There are two Boots the Chemist pharmacies in Thirsk, one in Chapel Street and one in the Market Place, and there is also a pharmacy within Tesco supermarket.
8:00am – 1:00pm; 1:30pm – 6:00pm
(Closed Wednesday lunchtime 12:30-1:30pm)
Repeat prescriptions can be ordered in the following ways:
Your medication will be ready for collection from the practice dispensary 72 hours (3 working days) after requesting it
Please allow 4 working days if the prescription is to be sent direct to Boots or Tesco
The dispensary staff will deal with prescription queries either at the desk or over the phone. Our telephone number is 01845 440462. The dispensary phone line will be open daily (Monday to Friday) between 1:00pm - 3:00pm ONLY for repeat prescriptions or queries. We have allocated this time when the levels of staff cover are sufficient to enable us to deal with the phone, surgery and patients calling at the desk. Dispensary staff are instructed to question any requests for changes to medications and any early issues. All medications must have a doctor’s approval and patients should therefore ensure that their medication is reviewed at regular intervals. Please note that in line with national policy guidelines, it is practice policy to dispense only one month's supply of medication at any one time.
For patients who take their prescription to the chemist, Boots in the Market Place, Boots in Chapel Street and Tesco operate a daily collection service. If you wish to make use of this service, please let us know when you phone in your request or indicate on your repeat prescription slip.
Government legislation requires that all prescriptions collected, except those exempt on age grounds, have to be signed for by the person who collects the medication. If you are exempt from payment you must CROSS the box that has the appropriate exemption and sign the form at the bottom, remembering to show dispensing staff proof of exemption. If you pay for your prescriptions you must fill in the amount you have paid and sign to say that the money has been collected from you. Please remember - it is not the responsibility of the dispenser to fill in your form Please read it carefully and fill in correctly. This will help the staff to carry on with their work.
We are sorry if at times we keep you waiting at the desk. However, as soon as there is a dispenser free you will be attended to. It is important that our staff give their full concentration to each item dispensed to ensure that errors are avoided, so for your safety, and that of other patients, please be kind and wait patiently to be served.
Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip.
Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.
Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs). The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.
There is further information about prescription exemptions and fees on the NHS website
