Advice for Patients 75 years of age and over taking daily low dose aspirin.

Up to date studies indicate that patients taking daily aspirin who are 75 years old or older are at increased risk of stomach bleeds. The risk of a major bleed increase four fold in this age group compared to younger patients. The outcomes of such events were also worse for these older patients being 10 times more likely to be disabling or fatal.

Whilst we can review patients that we prescribe aspirin to, those patients who buy their own aspirin are advised to speak to the surgery pharmacist about measures to protect the stomach and reduce risks of bleeding.
