Most outpatient services at South Tees have now opened up to routine activity.

  • All outpatient referrals will be triaged to support effective flow into appropriate clinics such as face to face, video consultation and telephone contact. In light of this, for the majority of specialties, appointments won’t be directly bookable. Patients will however be contacted directly by the Trust following triage to advise of their appointment details.
  • To ensure infection prevention and control measures are adhered to and patients are supported away from a hospital setting wherever possible, patients who need to be supported by secondary care may be offered a telephone or video consultation rather than a face to face appointment. Following clinical triage from referral, they may also be offered a diagnostic test before an outpatient appointment.
  • Independent Healthcare providers are continuing to support local NHS and Foundation Trusts and due to the pandemic situation, outpatient, diagnostic and surgical capacity overall is reduced. Because of this, there may be longer wait times for appointments than previously experienced before COVID-19.

Please be aware that there are longer waits than usual for access to first outpatient appointments for Gastroenterology. This will also be the case when Ophthalmology services open.

Please note that patients may wait longer than usual for routine surgery. Discussions will take place with each patient on an individual basis.

You may be aware of the Government’s initiative to allow patients to choose which hospital they go to if they need to be referred by their GP for assessment or treatment, and also to choose when they attend for their appointments.  

In line with this, the practice operates the NHS e-Referral Service, which means that if one of our Clinician's decides that you need a referral to a hospital, in most cases you will be given the chance to chose the hospital before you leave the practice.

NHS e-Referral Tracking

If your doctor has referred you to a specialist for further care you will be asked to book your appointment using the ‘NHS e-Referral’ system.

You will receive a letter from us within 2 weeks giving details of how to book your appointment and any passwords you may need.

To track your e-Referral you will need the following details to log into the e-Referral website:

  • Your date of birth
  • Reference number – this will be on the first page of your letter
  • Password – this will be on the second page of your letter
